2016 NSW Vertebrate Pest Management Symposium

New developments in science, policy and practice

The last NSW Pest Animal Control Conference was held in 2008. There have been many new developments in science, policy and practice since then, including:

  • new control and monitoring techniques and modifications to existing techniques
  • greatly increased affordability of some equipment (e.g. camera traps) that has led to a massive increase in the use of some monitoring techniques
  • more examples of ways to establish and maintain regional pest control groups
  • transition to the Local Land Services structure
  • passing of the Biosecurity Act 2015 and associated development of underlying regulations
  • Natural Resources Commission review of pest animal management in NSW.

It is therefore a good time to bring people involved in pest animal management, research and policy together to discuss the above and more. This is not a scientific forum, it will allow all government and non-government pest practitioners to participate in listening to a range of pest related talks and discussions. The symposium will feature dynamic, facilitated discussions at the end of each session. NSW Government would like to re-kindle this practitioner’s forum under the new name of the NSW Vertebrate Pest Management Symposium, it will be run over two half and one full day in Orange, in October 2016.

Several themes for the Symposium are proposed, including:

  • New management and monitoring techniques, tactics and tools
  • Strategic planning and performance measurement
  • Innovative management and/or community engagement case studies
  • New Research
  • Legislation and policy
  • New pests and incursions
  • Peri-urban pest management
